SETAG
The Scientific, Engineering and Technological Societies and Allied Professions Group of South Africa (SETAG) sector under the National Science and Technology Forum (NSTF)
SETAG is the largest of the six NSTF sectors. SETAG represents professional bodies, associations, societies and groups in various science, engineering and technology (SET) related professions. It is governed by an elected Executive Committee (SETAG Exco) currently chaired by Prof Stephanie Burton of the University of Cape Town. The SETAG Exco is represented on the NSTF Executive Committee and By-laws in the NSTF Constitution guide SETAG's operations: read about it here.
SETAG addresses issues of common interest to professionals in the field, and for example, the importance of Mathematics and Science education, and the visibility and recognition of the sector in building South Africa. .
Background
In 2004 the NSTF invited all the SET professional groups that it was aware of, to come together to form one group known as SETAG under the umbrella of the NSTF. SETAG was launched on 14 September 2004. More than 120 SET organizations were represented. All speakers at this launch emphasized the need for the formulation of SETAG and unity so that its power of lobbying and mobilization could be enhanced. Dr Adi Paterson, then Chief Operating Officer of the Department of Science and Technology represented government at the launch. He applauded SETAG members for this brave move and initiative and encouraged them to unite and work together in order to influence SET policy and strategies effectively.
Since then, SETAG has held regular meetings addressing issues of interest to its members.
SET organizations who are not yet members of SETAG are urged to join this powerful SET team. Your organisation can join SETAG by becoming an NSTF member in the SETAG sector.
